Justice Government Appoints Haught as Interim Executive Director of PEIA; congratulate Cheatham on his retirement

CHARLESTON, WV – Governor Jim Justice recently announced that he has appointed Jason Haught, CPA, as Acting Executive Director of the Public Employees Insurance Agency (PEIA) effective October 30, 2021.

Jason has been the CFO of PEIA since 2001. He is a graduate of Ceredo-Kenova High School and Marshall University.

It comes after current executive director Ted Cheatham announced his intention to retire effective October 29, 2021.

“I wish Ted the best in his retirement and have every confidence in the world that Jason will replace us and do a fantastic job,” Governor Justice said. “Ted has served this state very well in a position that people sometimes throw a lot of stones at. I congratulate Ted on his service and thank him beyond belief.

“PEIA is really on the move now,” continued the governor of justice. “From the day I walked through the door until now, we haven’t had any premium increases. When times got tough, we stepped up our efforts and invested over $ 100 million in the PEIA Rainy Day Fund, ensuring its stability for years to come, and we continue to try to help. We just had discussions earlier today on how we can help even more move forward. “

Cheatham was appointed in 2006 to oversee the self-funded group health insurance plans of the PEIA, which provide health and life insurance to more than 200,000 active and retired public employees and their dependents.

“Ted has done a tremendous job over the years for all of our employees and the citizens of West Virginia while in this role,” said former West Virginia Department of Administration Cabinet Secretary Allan McVey. “He is an accomplished professional who has always done his best for everyone in all situations.”

Prior to taking this appointment, Cheatham held various positions in the management of commercial health plans, including Medicaid, Medicare, and commercial health insurance products in general. He is a veteran of the United States Army and holds a bachelor’s degree in finance and personnel management, a master’s degree in business administration, and a doctorate in law.
